The Show…

Suitable for Years 1 to 4

(Also very suitable for nursery and reception as an entertaining and engaging piece of live theatre, but some elements may be slightly beyond their level of comprehension)

Employing a powerful blend of dance, physical theatre, storytelling and song, this feisty, contemporary fairytale tells the story of Brad, the new ram on the block, grappling with the weighty task of keeping a crooning wolf at bay, and Floss, the young ewe, who stands by her ram when everything gets…well…hairy. With a zealously knitting farmer's daughter and a jealous older sister, Baabs, to contend with, the journey is not always smooth, but baahber - shopping sheep telling the story will keep the smiles coming.

A play within a play, You Beautiful Ewe is the creative outpouring of a group of personified, exciteable sheep! They manage and interact with their own set and props, with the audience, and with the narrative structure of their own story. Sometimes they are in control of the plot and sometimes the plot appears to control them. "It is bonkers. But it works. It really works" says critic Adam Taylor (read the full review…)

The children will delight in the comical sheep as they see how a plot can unfold and be shaped, learn a bit about farming and self-sufficiency on the way, and share the sheep's emotions as they soul search their way through jealousy, fear, loss and resolution.

What others have to say…

"Wow! What an amazing show! This is perfect for primary schools, particularly Key Stage One, as it is so interactive, pacy, genuinely funny, cleverly simple and packed full of beautiful and quirky tunes that all the children will go out humming! It is also very moving and thought-provoking and taps into many PSHCE issues. The links to Literacy are perfect in terms of story telling, inspiring discussion and role play. But more importantly, this colourful and magical show oozes and fizzes with charming characters and music that grown ups and children alike will fall in love with. This is a fantastic opportunity to introduce young children to the rare and exciting charms of live theatre right in your own school hall!"Aidan Meech, KS1 co-ordinator

"I cannot tell you how impressed I was by "You Beautiful Ewe".  It was a thoroughly charming and delightful play - imaginative and witty, with a catchy song book.More please!!", Tamara Cizeika, parent, Roundhouse performance 2009

"Thank you for inviting us to watch the show. Our teachers and children (2-5 year olds) enjoyed the performance. A very funny and entertaining story, good choreography, lovely costumes that kept the children focused, the farm theme was created and captured well. Our children loved the sheep bleating and mimicked for days after. A good all round performance from all." Hampstead Activity Nursery, Hampstead

'Thank you so much for inviting me to see your 'beautiful' performance. You have produced an extremely enjoyable show… I must say I fell in love with all the sheep…I noticed that many of the younger members of the audience were totally taken over by the story…they seemed entranced as were their parents.Congratulations to you all!'Martin Cort - Theatre Director, Etcetera Theatre performance, 2008

' …[I] was enchanted by the overall enterprise… The audience who sat around me - which included a healthy dollop of school aged children - were enthralled from start to finish (and the parents were seen to enjoy themselves as well)… YOU BEAUTIFUL EWE is exactly the kind of work that can fire young ears at the beginning of their exciting course towards musical literacy.' Bruce Wall, director, LSW, Roundhouse performance 2009

'…The characters were really fun and the music was great for all. It was very carefully thought out too, as many 'childrens' performances these days either play too much to please the parents resulting in most of the jokes going way above their target audience's heads, or is too dumbed down. I thought that your production was 'just right'  Cleverly written, funny and exactly right for all ages! I thought it was better than when I saw the Gruffalo some years ago at the Soho theatre.' Melanie Marshall, parent, Roundhouse performance 2009
